A drowned volcano ringed by a barrier reef, with Mount Otemanu at the centre and a lagoon in seven separate blues. French Polynesia's headline island, and the birthplace of the overwater bungalow.
The lagoon that set the standard
The place
Bora Bora's shape does the work: a central volcanic island, a ring of flat coral motus around it, and between them a lagoon so shallow and clear that the colour changes every hundred metres. The resorts sit out on the motus, which means every one of them looks back at Mount Otemanu — the view is the product. The overwater bungalow was invented in French Polynesia in the 1960s, and the modern versions here remain the reference point. It is a long way from almost anywhere, and that is part of what you are buying.
