A Seychelles beach in the inner granitic islands

Primary island · Indian Ocean

Seychelles

The only mid-ocean granite islands on earth. Vast weathered boulders the colour of pewter, sitting in shallow turquoise — a landscape that photographs like nowhere else and supports wildlife found nowhere else.

Granite, not coral

The place

Most tropical islands are coral or volcanic. The inner Seychelles are fragments of an ancient continent, which is why the beaches are punctuated by house-sized granite boulders worn smooth over millions of years. Anse Source d'Argent on La Digue is the most photographed beach in the world for exactly this reason. The isolation also produced endemics: the coco de mer palm, which grows only in the Vallée de Mai on Praslin, and giant tortoises on Aldabra. Island-hopping is easy and expected here — Mahé, Praslin and La Digue are a short ferry or hop apart.

Worth knowing

  • Island-hopping is the norm — plan two or three bases rather than one.
  • Seaweed washes up on some beaches from June to September; it is seasonal and localised.
  • This is the most expensive of the three primaries, and the least resort-uniform.
