Overview

The longest Maldives trip we plan: four nights in Laamu at the only resort in the atoll, four over Soneva Jani's private lagoon in Noonu, and four at Gili Lankanfushi near Malé, where every villa is overwater.

Twelve nights is enough to see how different the atolls are. Six Senses Laamu is built from sustainable timber with a surf break off the point and serious marine research. Soneva Jani has five and a half kilometres of private lagoon and villas whose roofs slide open. Gili Lankanfushi is the gentle finish, twenty minutes from the airport.

Good to know

  • Resort islands are private. Alcohol is served on them and not on inhabited local islands.
  • Seaplanes do not fly after dark — a late arrival into Malé means an airport hotel night.
  • Half-board and all-inclusive plans matter here more than anywhere: there is nowhere else to eat.
