The Maldives invented the overwater villa and still builds it better than anywhere. Each resort has its own island, so once the seaplane leaves the world narrows to a ring of sand, a warm lagoon and the two of you. It is the easiest honeymoon to get right — and the easiest to get slightly wrong, because the atoll, the villa side and the transfer decide far more than the brand on the gate.

What we would tell a friend.
- Seaplanes fly in daylight only. Land late in Malé and the first night is an airport hotel — we time flights to avoid it.
- Half-board or all-inclusive matters more here than anywhere: on a private island there is nowhere else to eat.
- Sunset-side villas and house-reef access are worth more than an upgraded category on the wrong side.
- Resort islands are private. Alcohol is served on them and not on inhabited local islands.
- Seaplanes do not fly after dark — a late arrival into Malé means an airport hotel night.
- Half-board and all-inclusive plans matter here more than anywhere: there is nowhere else to eat.

When is the best time for a honeymoon in Maldives?
November to April is the prime window. The shoulder months — May and October — are quieter and often better value. Green season: May to October — lower rates, dramatic skies, best surf.
How do you get to Maldives?
